Design for Independent Living
At Canary Designs we work with charities who support independent living for people outside of the normative population. We help to identify assistive technology, create accurate digital avatars of the person in need, and then create digital versions of assistive technology that may help. Our client can then help to select the solution that would best suit them to regain a feeling of independence. Once selected the digital model is prototyped, and the client can then fine tune until perfect for their needs.

Our Process
Request for Support...
Our charitable projects are sourced through Remap, and during our monthly meetings together with local occupational therapists who refer new cases to us to embark on. As much as we would like to help everyone due to the resources this is not possible, therefore initial research is done during meetings to consider off the shelf solutions to recommend to the user. If you would like our support, please contact the North Wales Panel of Remap.
Understanding the Situation...
Once we have accepted a Remap case, we will organise a client visit in order to discuss the situation and understand their requirements. The purpose of these visits is to gather information such as wheelchair dimensions, the equipment they use, and video observation of common tasks performed.
Modelling Design Solutions...
Canary Designs collates all of the data gathered and creates a virtual simulation of the issues identified and proposes solutions to address the shortfalls. The simulation is then communicated with Remap and the end stakeholder for review.
Building Prototypes...
At Canary Designs all of the CAD models have been produced in Solidworks 2019 and are manufacturer ready. So, the designs can either be fabricated using a 3D printer or built using more traditional methods such as welding.
Real World Validation...
Once the prototype is ready, a second visit is arranged with the stakeholder and a full user trial is conducted to identify any snags with the prototype. Once the snags have been addressed then the final design is re-distributed amongst the stakeholders for approval.
Delivering the Solution
Canary Designs will personally deliver the finished design to the end stakeholder and offer support with the setting up and installation of the assistive technology solution. Further support is offered when required.
