Whether the project is to develop an entirely new system, service or product or to adapt an existing design. 1. Our Process: Project Scope
This is the defining point of a project lifecycle, when the problem / solutions are explored, the budgets are set, and the project journey is plotted. We at Canary can help you to analyse the problem / solutions from the human perspective, by defining the target population capabilities, a balanced allocation of function, designed on human terms.
2. Design Process
a) Research
We review all of the available products, systems that exist on the shelf (COTS), and look at tailoring (MOTS) where necessary to support the holistic design. Our focus is on initially finding design solutions that already exist and are available immediately.
b) Concepts
We create virtual environments for developing the holistic design, the sum of all the parts. We can create multiple concepts using virtual models of facilities, vehicles, and products. We also create multiple versions of human computer interfaces using wireframe to simulate the user experience.
c) Simulations
Digital manikins of the target Population are created, and the concept designs are thoroughly tested by simulating the interactions required to complete the required tasks. We create working control interfaces that accurately simulate the finished design and measure the human interactions with the system.
d) User Trials
When the concepts have been narrowed down and the design is taking shape, we build physical mock-ups, add in instructions and measure the performance of the overall design with real users. We have experience using video observation, interviews, eye tracking and more.

Canary stands out from other consultancies as we follow the project from start to finish. We ensure that any emergent design changes do not significantly reduce the human system performance.
