Provide Human Factors Design Support to the project and site operations teams for the development of the Block 1 for the Emergency Diesel Generator.
Methods
The starting point is always the design team, Canary designs formed part of a multi-disciplined design team. The focus for Canary is to establish the role of the human in the overall system design, to establish whether the allocation function is feasible for the humans in the loop to achieve and maintain system safety and integrity. This is achieved by reviewing the physical layout of the facility and the control / operating philosophy from the perspective of the target population. Canary designs recreate the entire range of the Target Population using Digital Human Modelling, recreates the tasks virtually, and identifies any shortfalls. All shortfalls come with recommendations to resolve the issues identified.
Outcome
We have helped to design (identification of user requirements) the block 1 facility layouts, and the identification of system integration issues (Human Factors Issues Register) that impacted human performance. Our common role was that of a systems integrator, responsible for ensuring that the supply chain deliver a common and consistent working environment for the EDF end users.

John and Canary Designs were called in to help us assess the ergonomics of our workplace in light of the repetitive nature of many of our laboratory activities. They spent time in the laboratory videoing activities and talking through tasks with the staff to ensure that they thoroughly understood them.
