Marine Biology Laboratory Brief

Canary Designs was asked by Hebog Environmental to conduct an Ergonomic Assessment of their laboratory and office space. Hebog are an independent marine biology laboratory that specialises in benthic ecology and benthic taxonomy. The laboratory is the main place of work for the scientists and the results of their analysis are inputted onto computer in a separate office.
Method
The initial process includes identifying the main sub-tasks within the laboratory, which included:
- Washing of samples
- Tray sorting
- Identification using microscope
- Weighing (Biomass)
- Data Entry and reporting
The target population was identified as the scientists using the laboratory, and a representative sample of anthropometric data taken to produce digital human manikins. During a site visit, video observations were used to capture how the scientists carried out each task and the postures used. Measurements of the workspaces critical design dimensions such as the height of workbenches, were also taken, so that a CAD model of the work environments could be generated. The NASA TLX workload assessment was deployed to measure the physical and mental workload associated with working at Hebog.
Outcome
Canary Designs identified that there was a requirement for a flexible working space that could adapt to the body shapes and sizes of the laboratory scientists. As part of the original job, a sit-stand desk was sourced, and fitted in the laboratory for pilot studies run by Hebog. On completion of the pilot study, Hebog have now installed 6 sit-stand desks along with height adjustable microscopes, a great example of inclusive design and a workspace that can be used by all.

John and Canary Designs were called in to help us assess the ergonomics of our workplace in light of the repetitive nature of many of our laboratory activities. They spent time in the laboratory videoing activities and talking through tasks with the staff to ensure that they thoroughly understood them.
